WASHINGTON - Katie Beckmann of Howards Grove received a Congressional Award Gold Medal at a June 19 Capitol Hill ceremony held to honor young Americans who challenge themselves and improve their communities. Rep. Tom Petri presented the medal.
In earning her award, the 23-year-old completed over 4,440 hours of voluntary public service. As an AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps volunteer, she served with a team and completed ten projects that addressed the issues of public safety, environment, education and disaster relief. She assisted in Hurricane Katrina relief work in Lumberton, MS, where she helped to open a shelter to assist hurricane victims.
"I'm terribly proud of Katie's accomplishment," Petri said. "She has received the highest honor that Congress awards to volunteers. So, it's a real feather in her cap and a wonderful thing at a time when so many people are volunteering all across Wisconsin because of our water emergency."
Beckmann said that she is currently working through the Sheboygan County Health and Human Services Department in a program for at-risk youths and will attend Lakeland College this fall to earn a degree in non-profit management.
